Description :

The dark purple-colored 1999 L'Evangile is a blend of 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc. The striking, evolved, hedonistic perfume of melted licorice intermixed with black raspberries, minerals, and truffles is an intellectual turn-on. This is a beautiful, medium to full-bodied L'Evangile with a sweet attack and mid-palate

Château L'Evangile

Château L’Evangile Grand Cru Classé Pomerol

L’Evangile appeared in the 1741 land registry under the name of Fazilleau, founded by the Libourne family Léglise. At the turn of the 19th century the property was sold to a lawyer named Isambert who gave the estate its present name, following the example set by Arnaud at neighbouring Pétrus.

In 1862, L’Évangile was purchased by Paul Chaperon, whose descendants, the Ducasse family remained the estate’s owners until 1990, when L’Evangile was acquired by Domaines Barons de Rothschild, the owners of Château Lafite Rothschild.

Château L’Évangile is a Bordeaux wine from the appellation Pomerol. The winery is located on the Right Bank of the Bordeaux wine region, in the commune of Pomerol in the department Gironde. As all wine produced in this appellation, Château L’Évangile is unclassified, but the estate is estimated among the great growths of the region.[1]

Placed on the eastern outskirts of Pomerol, the vineyard lies in a cluster with Vieux Château Certan, Château Pétrus, Château La Conseillante, near the border of Saint-Émilion and its nearest estate Château Cheval Blanc.

The fine wine from Château L’Evangile is described in an old edition of “Grand vins de Bordeaux” (Dussault Press) as “...full and elegant wines, with an unmistakable finesse and bouquet.” For many fans, the subtle and elegant quality is indeed the mark of this wine.

The name of the second wine of l’Evangile comes from the fact that the batches that could not go into the Grand Vin were sold under the former owners who used their family emblem. Blason de L’Evangile is selected from vats of the "Grand Vin" Château l’Evangile. It features characteristics similar to those of the "Grand Vin", but with lesser potential for ageing as its ageing in barrels is much shorter. It must be drunk younger than its more robust counterpart.

Notes de dégustation

Robert Parker : 89 points
"The dark purple-colored 1999 L’Evangile is a blend of 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc. It reveals an unexpected touch of herbaceousness, which cost it a point or two in the ultimate rating. Nevertheless, the striking, evolved, hedonistic perfume of melted licorice intermixed with black raspberries, minerals, and truffles is an intellectual turn-on. This is a beautiful, medium to full-bodied L’Evangile with a sweet attack and mid-palate. It may merit a higher score, depending on its evolution. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2015." (Mar 2002)

Wine Spectator : 90 points
"Rich and lovely wine for the vintage. Aromas of berries, herbs and tobacco. Medium- to full-bodied, with velvety tannins and a medium finish. Soft and delicious. Best after 2004." (Mar 2002)

Stephen Tanzer : 89-92 points
"Saturated ruby. Superripe aromas of black raspberry, cassis, maple syrup and tarry, smoky oak. Sweet, velvety and quite dense in the mouth, with just enough acidity for balance. With a hint of youthful austerity, this is not at all confectionary. Finishes with very fine tannins." (Jun 2001)
