The whites of Chassagne-Montrachet combine material, power and finesse and be expected to gain about ten years at least, to reveal the complex aromas of Chardonnay. Their persistence in the mouth is also difficult to equal.
![]() | Ramonet is a connoiseur’s wine, the product of a small domaine in Chassagne-Montrachet that focuses on white Burgundy and owns but .6 of an acre in the highly prized Montrachet vineyard. The tiny production is snapped up by its fans worldwide, even at prices three to 10 times those of other grand cru white Burgundies. Wine Spectator’s review : "Ramonet’s wines in general tend to be taut, tightly structured and racy with bright fruit flavors. Its Montrachet shows more oak than the domaine’s other wines, but this still seems positively sleek and lean in head-to-head comparisons with DRC’s version. Domaine Romanée Conti’s wines aims for opulence, lavishing layers of sweet oak on the ripe, heady fruit flavors. |
In great vintages, the comparisons are almost academic. A good example of a mature vintage is 1978. In this tasting, the DRC had become amazingly subtle and elegant, a seductive wine with nuances of honey, mineral and vanilla. It is absolutely ready.
The Ramonet is still youthful, forceful without weight, developing a range of aromas from pears to mushrooms. It could be considered ready, but feels as if it has years more to go. I give the DRC a slight edge with 98 points to Ramonet’s 96. "
