Château L'Evangile

Château L’Evangile Grand Cru Classé Pomerol

L’Evangile appeared in the 1741 land registry under the name of Fazilleau, founded by the Libourne family Léglise. At the turn of the 19th century the property was sold to a lawyer named Isambert who gave the estate its present name, following the example set by Arnaud at neighbouring Pétrus.

In 1862, L’Évangile was purchased by Paul Chaperon, whose descendants, the Ducasse family remained the estate’s owners until 1990, when L’Evangile was acquired by Domaines Barons de Rothschild, the owners of Château Lafite Rothschild.

Château L’Évangile is a Bordeaux wine from the appellation Pomerol. The winery is located on the Right Bank of the Bordeaux wine region, in the commune of Pomerol in the department Gironde. As all wine produced in this appellation, Château L’Évangile is unclassified, but the estate is estimated among the great growths of the region.[1]

Placed on the eastern outskirts of Pomerol, the vineyard lies in a cluster with Vieux Château Certan, Château Pétrus, Château La Conseillante, near the border of Saint-Émilion and its nearest estate Château Cheval Blanc.

The fine wine from Château L’Evangile is described in an old edition of “Grand vins de Bordeaux” (Dussault Press) as “...full and elegant wines, with an unmistakable finesse and bouquet.” For many fans, the subtle and elegant quality is indeed the mark of this wine.

The name of the second wine of l’Evangile comes from the fact that the batches that could not go into the Grand Vin were sold under the former owners who used their family emblem. Blason de L’Evangile is selected from vats of the "Grand Vin" Château l’Evangile. It features characteristics similar to those of the "Grand Vin", but with lesser potential for ageing as its ageing in barrels is much shorter. It must be drunk younger than its more robust counterpart.

Notes de dégustation

Robert Parker : 96 points
"This fabulous L’Evangile rivals such recent great vintages as 1998, 1995, 1990, and of course, 1982. With aeration, the thick, unctuous, saturated purple color is followed by scents of blueberries, blackberries, truffles, acacia flowers, tar, and graphite. Full-bodied, with tremendous opulence, intensity, and purity as well as silky tannin and a long, powerful, concentrated finish, with a hint of cocoa/chocolate, I initially thought this was a modern-day clone of the 1975, but now I am not so sure. The 2000 is a prodigious, intense, powerful offering, but the tannins are clearly sweeter than those of the controversial 1975." (2003)

Wine Spectator : 96 points
"Great concentration to this wine. Yet harmonious and classy. The ripe fruit and toasted oak jumps out of the glass in this one. Full-bodied, with an opulent fruit, coffee and milk chocolate character. Velvety and round textured. Best after 2010." (2003)
