Description :

The 2000 Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is spectacular, and certainly a noteworthy rival to the 1996, 1995, and even the extraordinary 1982. it is a wine of extraordinary density, opulence, great presence, and richness. As the 2000 sits in the glass, notes of lavender and melted licorice emerge along with tapenade aromas

Château Pichon Comtesse de Lalande

Château Pichon Comtesse Grand Cru Classé Pauillac   Pichon-Lalande had been acquired by none other than the Rouzard family of Roederer, the family acquiring a majority share of the estate, as well as in Chateau Bernadotte, also run by the de Lencquesaing family.

Delon acquired another 5 hectares. The major part of the vineyard is situated to the west and south of Pichon-Baron, on typical Gunzien gravels over a deeper clay and some very deep limestone and sandstone.

The vines are 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, an impressive 12% Cabernet Franc and 8% Petit Verdot. The fruit is harvested by hand, before being destemmed and crushed, and then fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, with a cuvaison usually lasting between 18 and 24 days. As the year draws to a close, May-Eliane and consulting oenologists Jacques Boissenot and Hubert de Boüard (the latter best known for his extended and highly successful stewardship of Angélus) earmark the wines for grand vin, Chateau Pichon-Longueville, Comtesse de Lalande (to give it its full title...about 35 000 cases per annum), or the second wine, Réserve de la Comtesse (about 6 000 cases per annum).

Some wines, particularly those from young vines, are excluded completely. The grand vin goes into Allier and Nievre oak, 50% new each vintage, for a period of up to 18 months, the second wine sees 25% new oak. There is a racking every three months, and a fining with egg white prior to bottling.

Notes de dégustation

Robert Parker : 97 points
"The 2000 Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is spectacular, and certainly a noteworthy rival to the 1996, 1995, and even the extraordinary 1982. A blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot, 10% Petit Verdot, and the rest Cabernet Franc, this effort has a dense saturated purple color, a singular/distinctive yet possibly controversial aromatic smorgasbord existing of creme de cassis, vanilla, and violets, but also tapenade and tree bark. No doubt the Petit Verdot has imparted a certain almost olive-like component to the wine’s aromatic profile. In the mouth, it is a wine of extraordinary density, opulence, great presence, and richness. As the 2000 sits in the glass, notes of lavender and melted licorice emerge along with the distinctive tapenade aromas interwoven with creme de cassis, espresso roast, and cedar. The wine is full-bodied, with extraordinary purity and a tremendous texture. I suspect this wine will be relatively approachable young but evolve effortlessly. This is a dramatic, almost flamboyant style that is not classic Pauillac in one sense, but a classic wine. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2025." (Apr 2003)

Wine Spectator: 95 points
"Classic character. Intense aromas of currant and minerals follow through to full-bodied palate, with loads of velvety tannins and a long, long finish. Some people find this herbaceous, but it reminds me of a currant bush more than something green. This character is due to a higher percent of Petit Verdot than normal. Muscular Pichon. Best after 2010." (Mar 2003)

Stephen Tanzer : 94 points
"Good full medium ruby. Rather wild aromas of plum, black raspberry, lead pencil, tobacco, minerals and roasted game. Sweet, thick and complex, with very ripe, mellow flavors of black raspberry, truffle, roasted herbs, espresso and tobacco. Will rely more on its firm tannins than its rather soft, harmonious acids for longevity. This very persistent wine may be starting to shut down in the bottle, but it displays the lovely penetrating sweetness of the year." (Jun 2003)

Bettane et Desseauve : 18/20
"Puissant, complexe et racé, c’est un vin de grande fraicheur aromatique, à la texture suave, profonde, d’évolution très longue mais sûre." (2009)
