Description :
Light gold color is accompanied a gorgeous perfume of caramel, honeysuckle, peach, apricot, and smoky wood. Full-bodied and unctuously-textured, with good underlying acidity as well as loads of sweetness and glycerin, it looks to be a great vintage for this renowned Sauternes estate

Château Yquem

Château Yquem 1er cru Classé Supérieur Sauternes

The vineyards at d’Yquem total 113 ha in all, although only 100 ha are in production at any one time. This allows for grubbing up of elderly vines and replanting following a year when the plot is left fallow. The mix in the vineyard is 80% Semillon and 20% Sauvignon Blanc, with none of the permitted Muscadelle.

The soils are variable, unsurprising for such a large estate, but there is much clay which necessitated the installation of the aforementioned field drains. Harvest is by hand in several tries, obviously, with yields typically 9 hl/ha. Fermentation is in oak, followed by typically three years in barrel, with a racking every three months. As mentioned above, in addition to the grand vin there is the a dry white Y; this now has an increasing proportion of Sauvignon, although it was once a 50/50 blend. It spends a year in oak with regular bâtonnage. It is quite a distinctive wine, being powerful and bone dry, but with botrytis character to be found on nose and palate.

Chateau d’Yquem is certainly a special estate, ranking among the top white vineyards of France, as documented by Curnonsky (1872 - 1956), along with Le Montrachet (Burgundy), Chateau Chalon (Jura), Chateau Grillet (Rhône) and Clos de la Coulee de Serrant (Loire).

Notes de dégustation

Robert Parker : 95 points
"The 1998 Chateau Yquem was released several months ago. This estate does not allow tasting from cask (where the wine spends 42 months), and it is not released until five years after the vintage. The 1998 Yquem (95 points) is a great success. Made in an elegant style, it is not a blockbuster such as 1990, 1989, and 1988. It is well-delineated, with wonderfully sweet aromas of creme brulee, pineapples, apricots, and white flowers. Medium to full-bodied, it is not as sweet as the biggest/richest Yquem vintages, but it is gorgeously pure, precise, and strikingly complex. Already approachable, it should evolve for 30-50 years ... without a doubt." (2003)

Quarin : 16,25/20

"Belle couleur jaune. Net. Un des nez les plus nets vus ici avec 89 et 90. Frais. Fin. Floral et moyennement complexe. Une caresse peaufinée circule en bouche sur un corps normal et termine épicée en bouche. Un vin fondant et subtil, plus net que 93 et 94, mais pas très profond en finale. "
