Description :

The Bordeaux-like, saturated dense ruby/purple color is followed by a tight-fisted nose and flavors of black fruits, underbrush, minerals, smoke, and new oak. Although extremely concentrated, the wine is broodingly backward, and not fun to drink ... yet. This loaded effort should prove to be one of the longest-lived red Burgundies

Allen Meadows’s Burgendy reference :

"The always thoughtful enologist François Millet called 2007 a "vintage with a curious growing season. We had an extremely hot April, in fact the warmest April ever, followed by a terrible summer. Despite the cool and wet weather, we had a vegetative cycle that was at least 3 weeks in advance of 2003! Normally, when you take two extremes, it doesn’t work very well. But in the end, in 2007 it worked. It was almost as though we had a normal growing season other than the early picking date. We began on September 1st and brought in very ripe fruit with potential alcohols of between 12.5 and 13%.

There was some sorting required though most of that was for botrytis. As to the wines, they are hyper classic, very frank and direct with beautiful transparency to the underlying terroir. There is great freshness to the fruit that exhibits a juxtaposition of elements that range from jam to citrus along with the classic raspberry. To me, 2007 is unique as I just can’t think of another vintage which it resembles." As the scores and comments confirm, I was exceptionally impressed by the in-bottle ’06s, especially the Chambolle 1er, which is as good a vintage for this wine since they first released it in 1995."

Notes de dégustation

Robert Parker : 96 points
" The 2014 Musigny Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru has a very intense, cold stone and blackberry scented bouquet, moving towards subtle marine like aromas (oyster shells, Crustacea) with time. There is just wonderful precision here. The palate is medium-bodied with a gentle grip in the mouth, firm backbone, a slightly more masculine Musigny with just a hint of savoriness towards the long finish. This is showing great personality even at this early juncture, although of course, it will not even consider reaching its drinking plateau without 8-10 years in bottle. I suspect this Musigny will only gradually open. Tasted November 2016."

Wine Spectator : 96 points
" Bright, dark red. Knockout nose offers most of the Musigny food groups: raspberry, cherry, earth, wild herbs, flowers and minerals, plus a leathery nuance. Pungent and extremely intense but utterly weightless owing to its near-perfect balance of sweetness and juiciness. Best today on the explosive, building back end, which offers a powerfully chewy, sappy impression but no rough edges. Winemaker François Millet suggests waiting at least 10 to 15 years.
