Description :

The nose is completely blocked by heavy reduction though the rich, full and robust flavors are serious, well structured and long. This appears to be a classic Nuits in make up and character

Domaine Rouget Emmanuel

Domaine Rouget Vosne-Romanée

Wine Spectator’s review :

"Since 1996, Jayer’s nephew, Emmanuel Rouget, has rented the 16 acres that Jayer owns in the Côte d’Or, including the grand cru Échézeaux and the premier cru Vosne-Romanée Beaumonts.

Through the 2001 vintage, Jayer still made about 1,000 bottles from two-thirds of an acre of Vosne-Romanée Cros Parantoux, a premier cru with 50-year-old vines; but in 2002, Rouget rented this parcel also. Now all Burgundies wines made from Jayer’s vineyards are sold under the Domaine Emmanuel Rouget label. "One day or another, you must stop," says Jayer.

Rouget opens a 1999 Nuits-St.-Georges. It is massive, tough and firm, but with lovely ripe fruit in the midpalate. Jayer eliminated 20 percent of the abundant ’99 crop to boost the concentration of the wines, and he considers his ’99s more concentrated than these ’02s.

The ’02 wine tastes silky and subtle, yet also powerful and very long. "The 2002s have more finesse and charm and they are more complete than the 1999s," says Rouget.

"Yes," says Jayer, "the tannins are rounder and better-integrated in ’02. They are not aggressive. You taste the ’fat’ in the 2002s."

The ’02 Échézeaux is also round and elegant. Jayer smells, swirls and drinks it. "I am swallowing that one," he says. "

Notes de dégustation

Allen Meadows : 87-89 points
"A very fresh and bright nose speaks of slightly herbal red berry fruit and warm earth notes that transfer over to the delicious middle weight flavors that are supported by relatively delicate tannins though the gassy finish cuts it short. Should be good but this is very primary." (2010)

Robert Parker : 89-90+ points
"Strikingly high-toned aromas of kirsch, maraschino, almond extract, and smoky black tea in the nose of Rouget’s 2008 Nuits-St.-Georges follow on the palate, accompanied by almost confectionary sucrosity yet also satisfying brightness of cherry, with a mouth-watering undertone of smoked meat broth. There is an almost grappa-like aura to the combination of spirituous fruit manifestations and notes from (30%) new wood, but that impression also helps restrain the sense of sweetness. This finishes convincingly, and conveys levity and refreshment while preserving a sense of textural richness, not to mention ripeness. Further integration of its sweet, bright, spirituous, and oaky elements may come with a bit of bottle age, and I am sure this will hold well for at least 6-8 years. I did not taste the 2008 Vosne-Romanee, which was in the process of being assembled." (2010)
