Description :
 Its opaque purple color is followed by crisp, rich, blueberry, blackberry, roasted meat, smoky, gamey, licorice and truffle notes. Extremely dense with fabulous fruit purity, a multidimensional mouthfeel and a massive finish, this wine will need a minimum of 10 years of cellaring and should keep for half a century

"Beaucastel and its subsidiary wines marketed under the Perrin et Fils moniker are consistently among the bright shining stars of France. I have been visiting this estate for nearly thirty years, and over that time I have seen all the elements of what makes wines great – an incredible respect for the vineyards, a conscientious, uncompromising work ethic, and extraordinary passion for gentle handling of fruit from their sites.

Brothers Jean-Pierre and Francois Perrin seem to be gradually inching closer to retirement as their sons take more and more of a front row seat in the running of this outstanding estate. This is a marvelous portfolio of wines, from the extraordinary values, to the top-end world classics. While one could say this is as traditionally run estate as can be found in western Europe, the Perrins are remarkably flexible if they sense that quality can be improved.

Quality rises dramatically with the Perrin et Fils cuvees. The Cotes du Rhone Reserve wines are produced primarily from the estate vineyards at Grand Prebois and Vinsobres, with some purchased fruit from such Cotes du Rhone appellations as St.-Gervais. Marc Perrin, who is responsible for winemaking at Perrin et Fils, seems to go from strength to strength with this line of wines, which includes negociant bottlings as well as some from estate vineyards in Vinsobres."

 The grand vin is named Chateau de Beaucastel, of which ten different vintages are tasted here. In my opinion this is the most significant wine produced by this estate, despite production running to perhaps 25000 cases per year. There are, however, other wines. Doubtless the most sought after is the Hommage à Jacques Perrin, a super-cuvée strong on Mourvèdre, produced in only the best vintages, commencing with the 1989. There are also two white cuvées from Beaucastel, both based on Roussanne, and bottled under the Châteauneuf du Pape AC. These are a straight white Chateau de Beaucastel Blanc, as well as a Roussanne Vieilles Vignes cuvée.

""Interestingly enough, even though many of the 2010 Perrin et Fils selections from the southern Rhone were scheduled to be bottled right after my visit, the 2010 Beaucastel had already been put in bottle. This is a gorgeous wine, a classic blend of 30% Grenache, 30% Mourvedre, 10% Syrah, 10% Counoise and the balance the other permitted varietals in the appellation. Deep purple, with loads of bouquet garni, beef blood, blackberry, kirsch, smoke and truffle, this wine is full-bodied, rich and showing even better than it did last year. I still think it needs 3-5 years of cellaring, and it should last for 25-30 years, as most of the top vintages of Beaucastel do." (2012)
