Burgundy 2026: a very small harvest, but an "explosion of flavours"

Burgundy has brought in one of its smallest vintages in recent years: about 30% less wine than the five-year average, according to the regional wine board (BIVB). Spring frost, poor fruit set on the white varieties and then a scorching summer (some sixty days above 30 °C and a severe lack of rain) produced small, concentrated berries.
The harvest was among the earliest on record: from 8 August for the Crémants of the Mâconnais, through to 12 September for the last grapes of the Côte-d’Or. The good news is the quality: flawless health, rich yet balanced juice, fresh whites and clearly expressed terroirs. Unusually, the BIVB is asking estates not to raise their prices despite the short crop.

Key takeaway: Burgundy 2026 will be scarce. Wine lovers would be wise to reserve their favourite cuvées early.
