Les Chazelles is a Pinot Noir plot in the south of Montagny, on thin soil where the limestone bedrock comes close to the surface. The vines are about twenty years old. The grapes are hand-harvested and about half destemmed, then fermented with indigenous yeasts in temperature-controlled tanks. The wine is aged for 14 months in French oak barrels (50% new), then 6 months in tank.
The 2022 is pale in colour, with a discreet nose of red and black berries, purple flowers and forest floor, plus a touch of cedar. The palate is broad and silky, more powerful than expected, with the ripe fruit of a sunny vintage, fine spice and delicate tannins. When young, it benefits from being opened a little ahead of time or decanted.
