Description of the Champagne Charbaut Hélène
Les Pinailleuses is a 100% Pinot Noir blanc de noirs from the estate's oldest plots in Bisseuil, Mareuil-sur-Aÿ and Avenay-Val-d'Or, planted between 1921 and 1983 on clay-limestone soils
The granddaughter of Guy Charbaut, Hélène Charbaut founded her own house in 2020 after spells at Leclerc Briant and Pehu Simonet. She farms about 2.7 hectares of Premier Cru vines in the Vallée de la Marne, in Bisseuil, Mareuil-sur-Aÿ and Avenay-Val-d’Or, sustainably and organically in the years that allow it. In the cellar she works with native yeasts, without fining or filtration, with barrel ageing and very low dosages. Within a few years she has become one of the most closely followed young growers in Champagne.
Les Pinailleuses is a 100% Pinot Noir blanc de noirs from the estate’s oldest plots in Bisseuil, Mareuil-sur-Aÿ and Avenay-Val-d’Or, planted between 1921 and 1983 on clay-limestone soils. The wine ferments with native yeasts in 228-litre barrels, ages on its lees without stirring, then spends about 30 months on lees in bottle. It is dosed Extra Brut, at under 3 g/L.
The precise nose suggests cherry, red apple and lemon zest. The palate is vinous and ample, with fine bubbles, a silky texture, notes of toast and nuts, and a dry, mineral finish. A powerful, refined grower Pinot Noir that shines at the table.
