Description of the Domaine de l'Oratoire Saint-Jean d'Aureilhan
The red blends Mourvèdre, Syrah and Sangiovese: Mourvèdre brings structure, Syrah dark fruit and spice, Sangiovese freshness and tension. Low-intervention winemaking aims for precise fruit
L’Oratoire Saint-Jean d’Aureilhan is the estate of Franck Soulayrol, the son of a winegrower and nephew of the Vaillé family (La Grange des Pères). After years working in several French wine regions, he returned in 2021 to Liausson, on the shores of Lake Salagou, to found his estate of about 6 hectares. The vines grow on schist, limestone, marl and molasse soils, farmed organically and worked by hand. Within a few vintages the estate has become one of the most promising and most confidential young names in the Languedoc.
The red blends Mourvèdre, Syrah and Sangiovese: Mourvèdre brings structure, Syrah dark fruit and spice, Sangiovese freshness and tension. Low-intervention winemaking aims for precise fruit, and the wine is aged in 228-litre Burgundy barrels.
The 2023 has a dark, shiny colour. The nose combines blackberry, blackcurrant, black cherry and plum with violet, pepper, garrigue, liquorice and a warm-stone note. The palate is ample, velvety and concentrated, with fine, well-defined tannins, preserved freshness and a finish of dark fruit, spice and minerality. A dense, harmonious wine that benefits from aeration and will gain from a few years in the cellar.
