Les Abeilles comes from a single plot in Rotalier, in the southern Jura (Sud Revermont), facing due south on Bajocian limestone. The Chardonnay vines were planted in 1959 by massal selection and give low yields. The grapes are hand-harvested and fermented with native yeasts. The wine is fermented and aged in 456-litre barrels, then bottled unfined and unfiltered.
The wine shows a nose of crystalline minerality, citrus and flint, with a buttery touch from the oak. The palate is dry and powerful, carried by vibrant acidity and an elegant structure. The finish is long, on citrus and minerality. This is a precise, classy old-vine Jura Chardonnay, in the style of great white Burgundy.
